KAOHSIUNG — Plans for developments adjoining two future Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line stations have cleared a central government zoning review, advancing a three-building project in the Jiangong shopping district and a separate development near Weiwuying.

The Ministry of the Interior’s Urban Planning Commission approved urban plan amendments for the Y8 and Y18 station projects on Nov. 3, Liberty Times reported. The approval concerns land-use planning; the proposed buildings have yet to be constructed.

At Y8 in Sanmin District (三民區), the city plans three buildings near National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology’s Jiangong Campus (國立高雄科技大學建工校區) and Kaohsiung Industrial High School (高雄高工). The station will connect with light rail station C28.

The university is to receive one building for a technology and industry collaboration center, providing space for research, business partnerships, and training. The project also includes renewal of the high school’s student activity center.

The city aims to attract a developer in 2027 and complete the project in 2032. Those targets and the three-building proposal were also set out in the city government’s earlier announcement following local planning approval in July.

Deputy Mayor Lin Chin-jung (林欽榮) said the development would combine the two schools’ resources to support artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology, and smart manufacturing, according to Liberty Times.

The Y18 site covers about 5,300 square meters near the boundary between Lingya District (苓雅區) and Fongshan District (鳳山區). Nearby destinations include the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, Weiwuying (衛武營國家藝術文化中心), Kaohsiung City Council (高雄市議會), and the planned Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Kaohsiung.

MRT Bureau Director Wu Chia-chang (吳嘉昌) said plans call for underground connections linking the development with Orange Line station O10, Weiwuying, and LaLaport. The Y18 project is part of the city’s broader redevelopment plans for central Fongshan.
