Taiwan is experiencing a severe and sustained decline in its birth rate, with predictions indicating it is on course to have the world’s lowest total fertility rate (TFR) by 2035. The number of newborns in 2024 hit a record low for the ninth consecutive year. The overall population began to decrease in 2020. It is projected to fall below 20 million by 2050 and could decrease by as much as 30% by 2065.
Current Rate (2025): Taiwan’s TFR for August 2025 was estimated at 0.76, and it may have fallen below 0.75 in September 2025. The annual number of births in 2024 was around 135,000, a historic low, and the 2025 figure is projected to be under 110,000.
