KAOHSIUNG — There will soon be 15 new automated traffic enforcement sites across the city, with seven at intersections targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians set to begin operation on May 1, city officials said.

CtiNews reports that the other eight sites, which will monitor multiple types of intersection violations, are expected to begin operating in the second half of the year. The expansion represents an investment of just over NT$30 million.

Officials said the new sites are mostly in busy areas with heavy pedestrian traffic and a higher risk of accidents, especially near schools, traditional markets, shopping areas, and hospitals.

Under current rules, failure to yield to pedestrians carries a fine of NT$6,000. The city said it already has 25 pedestrian-yield automated enforcement sites, mainly around schools, markets, commercial areas, and hospitals.

According to the city government, Kaohsiung had 108 automated traffic enforcement sites in 2025, mainly targeting speeding, red-light running, and failure to obey signs, road markings, and traffic signals. Authorities issued nearly 70,650 citations last year.

City figures indicate that accident totals have fallen at intersections with automated enforcement. So far this year, 695 traffic accidents have been recorded at sites with such systems, down 129 cases from before installation — a drop of almost 16 percent. In 2025, the city said accidents at those intersections fell by 441 cases, or 15.1 percent, to 2,487.
