CHIAYI — Paiyun Lodge (排雲山莊), the mountain hut near the summit of Yushan (玉山), has drawn public attention after posting a job opening with a starting monthly salary of NT$45,000.

The lodge, located at an elevation of 3,402 meters, said the position includes meals, accommodation, and 15 days off per month.

According to a recruitment notice posted April 29 on the lodge’s social media page, staff duties include guest reception, kitchen preparation, retail sales, and cleaning.

The job is not easy to reach. Paiyun Lodge is accessible only by hiking about 8.5 kilometers from the trailhead, with no vehicle access available. The notice said applicants must be able to handle high-altitude conditions and “endure loneliness.”

The post sparked discussion online, with many people focusing on the “15 days on, 15 days off” schedule and the potential to save money because meals and lodging are provided.

Others noted the physical demands of working at high altitude, including fatigue, isolation, and the risk of altitude sickness.

The lodge advised people without experience living or working in mountain environments not to apply.
