KAOHSIUNG – A new public safety video from the Kaohsiung City Government Police Department uses horror tropes to deliver a straightforward message: do not drive under the influence of drugs.

Released ahead of Ghost Month, a traditional Taiwanese observance in the seventh lunar month when the gates of the underworld are believed to open, the short film shows a driver taking a puff from a suspicious cigarette. Instantly, a zombie materializes in the passenger seat. The video concludes with a stark tagline: “Scary movies make you temporarily hold your breath; drug driving results in permanently holding your breath.”

The campaign has resonated online, accumulating more than 340,000 views and 7,800 likes on social media platforms since its release, according to a local news report.

The timing aligns with a broader crackdown on impaired driving. As of mid-June 2026, Kaohsiung police had intercepted and penalized 897 drug-driving cases, the department said. Authorities noted that stricter enforcement and heavier penalties for drug-impaired driving took effect this year to deter reckless behavior before it results in fatalities.

While the zombie gimmick leans into seasonal folklore, police emphasize that the consequences of drug driving are entirely real. Officers said they will continue to conduct targeted patrols at high-risk locations throughout the month.
