KAOHSIUNG / TAINAN — Air connectivity between southern Taiwan and Japan is continuing to expand, with new direct services linking Tainan and Kaohsiung to key Japanese cities now in operation.

According to Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration, low-cost carrier Tigerair Taiwan has completed inaugural flights on its new Tainan–Kumamoto and Kaohsiung–Kumamoto routes, while a Tainan–Okinawa service has also officially launched. With these additions, southern Taiwan now offers direct flights to nine Japanese destinations, giving travelers more options and reducing the need to transit through northern airports.

Civil Aeronautics Administration Director-General Ho Shu-ping said the new services respond to long-standing demand from residents in southern Taiwan, particularly Tainan, and are expected to support both outbound tourism and inbound travel from Japan.

Officials noted that travel between Taiwan and Japan has rebounded strongly since the pandemic. Tourism data show Japan remained the top overseas destination for Taiwanese travelers from January through September last year, accounting for roughly 30 percent of all outbound trips. Currently, 18 airlines operate routes between Taiwan and Japan, serving 33 cities, with Tigerair Taiwan flying to the majority of those destinations.
