KAOHSIUNG — About one-third of Kaohsiung residences with household registrations have only one registered occupant, according to first-quarter Ministry of the Interior data.
Of the city’s approximately 998,000 registered residences, 337,000 had just one person registered at the address, accounting for 33.7% of the total.
The average number of registered residents per home fell to a new low of 2.77 during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting Kaohsiung’s declining population and changing household structure.
Cianjin District (前金區) had the city’s highest proportion of single-person registered homes at 51.23%. Its average residence had 2.04 registered occupants, the lowest figure among Kaohsiung’s districts.
Nearby Sinsing District (新興區) ranked second, with about 45% of registered residences listing only one person.
A real estate agent cited by the Liberty Times said Cianjin’s central location and concentration of businesses attract working professionals seeking homes close to employment.
Limited land availability has also encouraged developers to build smaller apartments, contributing to the prevalence of one-person registrations, the agent said.
Kaohsiung’s Indigenous mountain districts recorded substantially larger households.
Maolin District (茂林區) had the city’s highest average, with 4.27 registered residents per home. Taoyuan (桃源區) and Namasia (那瑪夏區) also averaged more than four people.
The figures refer to the number of people officially registered at each residence and do not necessarily indicate how many people physically live there.
