KAOHSIUNG — The Sanmin Sports Center (三民運動中心), one of Kaohsiung’s most closely watched new public sports facilities, is scheduled to open in July on the former site of the Yangming Skating Rink (陽明溜冰場), according to local officials.

The new center is expected to serve residents in Sanmin District (三民區) and surrounding neighborhoods, with city authorities describing it as one of the most fully equipped sports centers in Kaohsiung. In addition to standard indoor fitness and recreation facilities, the project has drawn attention for including what officials say will be the city’s only rooftop croquet court.

The rooftop design is being presented as both a practical use of space and an effort to make the center more accessible to older residents. The city has increasingly framed new public facilities around the idea of an “all-age friendly” urban environment, with sports and recreation spaces intended to serve children, working adults, and seniors alike.

The rooftop croquet court is likely to be one of the center’s defining features, both because of its unusual placement and because croquet remains especially popular among older age groups. Officials appear to be betting that the facility’s range of amenities, combined with its location in a densely populated district, will make it a major draw after opening.
