KAOHSIUNG — Taiwan’s fastener industry, centered in the industrial clusters of Gangshan (岡山) and Luzhu (路竹), is accelerating its transition toward high-precision and low-carbon manufacturing as the sector prepares for the 8th Taiwan International Fastener Show (Fastener Taiwan 2026) taking place at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center April 22-24
Despite global supply chain restructuring, Taiwan maintained a stable export volume of approximately 1.2 million tons in 2025. Data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) indicates that while information and communication technology dominated 2025 exports, the broader “Base Metals and Articles” category—which includes fasteners—totaled almost US$28 billion. The industry remains the world’s third-largest exporter, accounting for roughly 13% of global production.

The “Green Wall” of 2026
The strategic urgency for 2026 is driven by the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which officially entered its definitive phase on January 1, 2026. Under the new “current year accumulation, next year settlement” model, Taiwanese manufacturers must now provide verified actual emissions data for all exports to the EU.
Industry analysts warn that reliance on “default values” for carbon reporting will trigger a 10% punitive markup in 2026, increasing to 20% in 2027. In response, Kaohsiung-based “hidden giants” like Taiwan Shan Yin (Specialists in dental and automotive screws) and Sheh Fung (Coated screws) are integrating AI-driven energy monitoring to bypass these costs.
Shift to High-Value Markets
To counter regional price-dumping of standardized steel products, the 2026 roadmap focuses on three high-value pillars:
- Electric Vehicles (EVs): Supplying Tier-1 brands, including Tesla and Toyota, with high-strength battery and powertrain fasteners.
- Aerospace & Medical: Leveraging Kaohsiung’s integrated supply chain to produce titanium-alloy components for aviation and dental implants.
- Smart Infrastructure: Utilizing 3D metal forming to reduce raw material waste by 30%.
Upcoming Global Summit
The Fastener Taiwan 2026 exhibition will run from April 22 to 24 at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (高雄展覽館). The event, themed “Sustainable Fasteners, Precision in Action,” is expected to attract 10,000 global buyers and will feature a new “Green Supply Area” highlighting waste-reuse technologies.
