KAOHSIUNG — A former exhibition hall near the Love River is being transformed into a new home for Kaohsiung Public Library’s Yancheng Branch (鹽埕分館), known for its extensive comics collection.
The branch will relocate from the fifth and sixth floors of Yancheng Public Market to the ground floor of the former International Convention Center Kaohsiung (高雄國際會議中心). Its official website confirms that the old location closed on Sept. 1 for the move, with reserved-book pickups temporarily transferred to the South Gushan Branch.
Local civic group 高雄好過日 recently highlighted the conversion, describing tall wooden bookshelves, timber partitions and stepped reading seats taking shape inside the former exhibition space. There is now reportedly substantial interior work underway.
The move will give the branch a more visible, ground-floor setting for a collection that, according to the group, includes more than 21,000 comics. Its holdings range from children’s and educational titles to Taiwanese comics and popular Japanese series, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Some titles at the former branch were reserved for reading on site.
Comics have been a specialty of the Yancheng Branch since 1999, according to the National Central Library’s records. The branch itself opened in 1993, initially focusing on children’s reading.
Louisa Group’s café and restaurant brand White Mist (白霧時光) is also planned for the site. Earlier publicity pointed to a late-October opening, while an August United Daily News report described the Yancheng library location as a year-end opening. An exact public opening date has not been confirmed.
The new location is at 274 Jhongjheng 4th Road (中正四路274號), near the Kaohsiung Museum of History and the Love River, and within walking distance of Yanchengpu Station (O2) on the MRT Orange Line.
Readers should check the branch’s announcements before visiting.
