KAOHSIUNG — The Marine Wonderland Garden (海洋奇珍園) inside Chengcing Lake Scenic Area (澄清湖風景區) will remain open after operators secured a three-year contract extension from the Kaohsiung City Government, easing fears that the long-running attraction would close following the expiry of its lease last year.

The Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau confirmed that the company operating the facility submitted an improvement plan late last year. After reviewing the proposal, officials agreed to renew the lease through Dec. 31, 2028, while pledging continued oversight to ensure service and safety upgrades are implemented.

Originally scheduled to cease operations at the end of last year after the city took over management of the Chengcing Lake area, the aquarium’s potential closure had prompted a wave of farewell visits from residents eager to see the exhibits one last time. The attraction, converted from a wartime underground command center, features a marine tunnel and diverse aquatic displays and has long been regarded as a nostalgic site for many Kaohsiung residents.

Operators said aging internal facilities necessitate a temporary closure in mid-June for roughly six weeks to carry out renovations. Planned works include rebuilding exterior cabins and upgrading interior equipment while preserving the distinctive character of the former underground command structure.

City officials said the improvements are expected to enhance visitor experience and public safety, with the revamped facility set to reopen later this year in a refreshed form.
