KAOHSIUNG — A 26-year-old man was arrested early Friday after allegedly driving drunk and crashing into a YouBike station and a nearby parking area in Lingya District, police said.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Jhongshan 2nd Road (中山二路) and Lingya 2nd Road (苓雅二路). According to the Kaohsiung City Police Department’s Lingya Precinct, the driver, surnamed Chang (張), suddenly veered left while traveling behind another vehicle and accelerated across the oncoming lane, striking several YouBike docking posts on the sidewalk before crashing into an adjacent parking lot.

No pedestrians or other vehicles were struck, and the driver was uninjured. However, officers at the scene detected a strong odor of alcohol. A breathalyzer test recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.92 mg/L, far exceeding Taiwan’s legal limit.

Police said the man will be referred to prosecutors on suspicion of offenses against public safety. Authorities added that drunk driving can carry fines ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$120,000, along with a two-year suspension of the vehicle’s license plates. Further responsibility for the crash will be determined following a thorough analysis of the traffic accident.
