KAOHSIUNG — A scale model of new metro trains for Kaohsiung’s expanding rail network was unveiled this week at the Kaohsiung Smart City Summit, offering a first look at the next generation of rolling stock planned for future lines.

According to the Kaohsiung City Government’s Mass Rapid Transit Bureau (高雄市政府捷運工程局), the trains are being designed for the Gangshan–Luzhu Extension Line (岡山路竹延伸線) and the Siaogang–Linyuan Line (小港林園線), two key projects aimed at extending service further into northern and southern districts.

The model, built at a 1:24 scale, was displayed at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center as part of the city’s broader push to showcase smart infrastructure and urban development initiatives.

Officials said the full-sized trains are expected to arrive in 2028.

The exterior design follows a “soaring with the wind” concept, featuring streamlined contours intended to reflect forward momentum and urban growth. The design was guided by artist Lin Hsi-chun (林熺俊), known for previous public space and transit-related works in Kaohsiung.

Interior elements draw inspiration from local landmarks, including the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas at Lotus Pond (蓮池潭龍虎塔) and the city skyline.

The trains will use a high-capacity system with stainless steel bodies, measuring approximately 65.75 meters in length and weighing about 123.7 metric tons when empty, according to MRT Bureau Director Wu Chia-chang (吳嘉昌).

The unveiling comes as Kaohsiung continues to position itself as a testbed for smart city applications, with this year’s expo highlighting digital and green transition themes alongside transportation, healthcare, and energy innovations.
