KAOHSIUNG — The Kaohsiung City Government (高雄市政府) on March 28 launched construction on a NT$15.5 billion transport project to improve access to the Southern Taiwan Science Park’s Kaohsiung Third Park (楠梓園區), a key hub in the city’s semiconductor supply chain.

The project aims to address persistent congestion in Nanzih (楠梓) and Houjin (後勁), including traffic around TSMC (台積電) facilities. Planned works include new connector roads and additional ramps linking to National Freeway 1 (國道1號), allowing traffic to flow more directly between the science park and surrounding districts, including access toward Zuoying High Speed Rail Station (左營高鐵站). The press release did not give a date for completion.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) and representatives from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (交通部), Ministry of the Interior (內政部), National Science and Technology Council (國科會), and the Freeway Bureau (高公局), as well as industry stakeholders.

Authorities said the project involves complex engineering, including crossings over National Freeway 1, Provincial Highway 1 (台一線), the Houjin River (後勁溪), and Taiwan Railways tracks, as well as soil remediation in surrounding areas.

Officials said the upgrades are designed to improve traffic flow, support daily commuting, and strengthen logistics for the semiconductor sector as part of the broader “S Corridor” (半導體S廊帶) development in southern Taiwan.

The project carries a total budget exceeding NT$15.5 billion, with funding contributions from central government agencies, including NT$7 billion from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, NT$5.8 billion from the National Science and Technology Council, and NT$1 billion from the Ministry of the Interior.
