KAOHSIUNG — A job placement program in Kaohsiung is helping some job seekers overcome barriers that aren’t tied to a lack of skills, but rather to interview preparation and presentation, according to the city’s Labor Affairs Bureau (勞工局).

Officials cited the case of a man surnamed Wang (王), who had struggled to secure stable employment after graduating from a vocational high school in food and beverage studies. Financial constraints prevented him from continuing his education and limited his ability to maintain a professional appearance, which he said affected both his confidence and interview outcomes.

Wang had relied on short-term jobs and delivery work, with inconsistent income. After seeking assistance at the Labor Affairs Bureau’s Chenggong Employment Service Station (成功就業服務站), he was referred to a Ministry of Labor program aimed at supporting disadvantaged job seekers with interview preparation.
The program provided limited financial assistance for clothing and grooming, along with interview coaching. Employment counselors also conducted mock interviews and advised on communication and presentation.
According to the bureau, Wang later secured a full-time position with a chain restaurant.
The Labor Affairs Bureau said such programs are designed for individuals who face financial barriers to job preparation, including the cost of appropriate attire. Under current guidelines, eligible participants may receive up to NT$2,500 per year for interview-related clothing and grooming, along with limited support for transportation and meals during the job search process.

Officials said first impressions can play a role in hiring decisions, but emphasized that assistance is targeted at those assessed as having limited financial means.
