PINGTUNG — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on April 4 visited a children’s event at the Pingtung County Government complex, where local officials promoted youth participation and play as part of public policy.

The event, titled “Surround the County Government, Children Take the Lead,” drew large crowds of families over the Children’s Day holiday, according to organizers.

Speaking at the venue, Lai said he thought the Pingtung County event was “a great idea,” and said it clearly shows an effort by local officials to place greater emphasis on children’s perspectives.

Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said the program was in line with principles outlined in international conventions on children’s rights, including the right to play and to participate in decisions affecting their environment.

The event featured activity stations organized by county departments, including role-playing as junior police officers, firefighters, and environmental workers. Organizers also introduced a “junior magistrate” concept, with children presenting ideas on issues including environmental protection, transportation, and school life.

Chou said the county expanded the program this year to two days and increased participation from government agencies and civic groups. Local officials said they plan to continue developing similar initiatives to increase youth engagement.

The event attracted some international attention, with representatives from Thailand visiting to observe and exchange ideas related to children’s programming and play-based learning.
