Pingtung has removed more than 90,000 invasive green iguanas so far this year, with trained civilian hunters accounting for most captures.

The Donggang festival is held once every three years and is recognized as an important national folk custom. It is one of Pingtung County’s largest religious events. The wooden King Boat measures almost 47 Taiwanese feet, or about 14 meters, and cost approximately NT$13.8 million, the county government said.
Runners can enter one of four categories: a 42-kilometer full marathon, a 21-kilometer half marathon, a 12-kilometer challenge race, or a 4-kilometer experience race. Activities will take place over the weekend of November 14-15, with the races scheduled for Sunday.
The material was a piece of wood retained from the construction of a ceremonial boat for the Donggang Donglong Temple (東港東隆宮) Wangye Welcoming Festival, also known as the King Boat Festival. It was sent into orbit through the “Milky Way Watch” (天河守望) project, a collaboration between the Pingtung County Government and National Central University (國立中央大學).
The 2026 Pingtung Summer Carnival (屏東夏日狂歡祭) opened Friday night at Pingtung County Citizens Park (屏東縣民公園), launching nearly two months of children’s activities, play equipment, and themed performances.
Several markets are also planned in Pingtung City. The “Ping Hua Yang” market will run from July 3 to 5 under the railway bridge corridor on Wancang Street (萬倉街), with flowers, food, and cultural-creative vendors. Shengli Star Village (勝利星村) will host markets built around beer and taro themes, a secondhand goods market on Aug. 15, and a NEKO MARKET event later in August featuring pet-friendly activities, crafts, and street performances.
Tourism officials say the added water recreation options should help Dapeng Bay attract more domestic and international visitors.
County officials said about 5,000 people attended the event, which has become one of Jiadong’s main Dragon Boat Festival activities. This year’s program also included a watermelon design contest, a watermelon-eating contest, and a farmers’ market.
