KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung-based scooter maker Kymco says its new G7 got more than 300 orders on the first day of pre-orders, a strong early result for one of its more expensive new models. The G7 appears to be aimed at riders who want something closer to a premium small touring scooter than a basic commuter bike.

The China Times reports that Kymco received more than 100 orders within seconds after the booking system opened on April 20. Kymco chairman Ko Chun-pin said the response showed strong interest before the scooter officially goes on sale.

The G7 has a suggested price of NT$125,800, which puts it well above the price of many standard white-plate scooters. Kymco is trying to sell it as a more premium model, with stronger performance, extra safety features, and a more advanced design.

In simple English, the G7 is expensive because it is not a standard “white-plate” commuter bike. Officially, it has a 175.1cc engine, 17.8 ps combined output, cornering ABS, traction control, keyless start, an 8-inch color display, LED lights, USB charging, and a 25-liter storage box.

Kymco plans to hold test ride events in May in Kaohsiung, Taoyuan, Taichung, Taipei, and Tainan as it tries to build more interest before the full launch.
