KAOHSIUNG — A traffic enforcement camera at the west-side intersection of Jhongjheng 1st Road (中正一路) and the freeway in Lingya District (苓雅區) recorded the highest number of violations among Kaohsiung’s monitored locations in the first three months of the year, according to city data.
The Liberty Times reports that Kaohsiung has 68 road sections or intersections equipped with automated traffic enforcement systems. From January to March, the Jhongjheng 1st Road location recorded 1,883 violations, the highest in the city.
The second-highest total was at the intersection of Dajhong 1st Road (大中一路) and Dingjhong Road (鼎中路) in Sanmin District (三民區), with 1,121 violations. Third was the intersection area around Jhongshan 4th Road (中山四路), Jhong-an Road (中安路), and Jhongping Road (中平路) in Cianjhen District (前鎮區), with 875 violations.
City officials said red-light running was the most common violation, with 7,592 cases from January to March. Fines range from NT$1,800 to NT$5,400. The next most common violations were making a right turn on red, with 2,311 cases, and failing to follow traffic signs, road markings, or signals, with 2,244 cases.
Officials said the 68 monitored sites recorded 695 traffic accidents in the first quarter, down 129 cases, or about 15.7 percent, compared with the period before the equipment was installed. Last year, those sites recorded 2,487 accidents, down 441 cases, or about 15 percent.
Kaohsiung will add seven new automated enforcement locations targeting drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians starting May 1. The new sites include intersections in Fongshan (鳳山), Sanmin, Nanzih (楠梓), Lingya, Cianjin (前金), and Zuoying (左營) districts.
