KAOHSIUNG — The Kaohsiung City Education Bureau (高雄市教育局) expanded its rural science outreach this week by sending its Maker Mobile Classroom (Maker 圓夢車) to Baoshan Elementary School (寶山國小) in the mountainous Taoyuan District (桃源區), according to a report by the Liberty Times. The program focuses on “maker” education, an instructional approach that combines hands-on technology, mechanical assembly, and practical physics to build technical self-reliance among students.
The vehicle traveled nearly 100 kilometers along mountain roads to deliver the specialized curriculum designed by Yingming Junior High School (英明國中). During the sessions, rural students assembled custom rubber-band wooden toy guns. Instructors used the building process to teach mechanical structures, leverage principles, and the application of rubber-band tension. The training team also organized a supplementary technology demonstration where students remotely operated and flew illuminated drone soccer balls in aerial competitions.
The mobile classroom initiative was originally launched in 2018 to bridge the educational resource gap between urban centers and remote communities. Over its seven years of operation, the program has recorded 200 instructional sessions serving 45 remote schools across the municipality. Campus data indicates the hands-on building method helps students overcome initial unfamiliarity with tools, fostering an early interest in engineering and technology fields.
