KAOHSIUNG — BTS fans in Taiwan are turning to divine assistance as competition builds for tickets to the K-pop group’s upcoming Kaohsiung concerts.
The group is scheduled to perform three shows in Kaohsiung on Nov. 19, 21, and 22, marking a major pop-culture event for southern Taiwan and one of the city’s highest-profile international music bookings of the year.
According to Reuters, fans have visited Taipei’s Bangka Longshan Temple (艋舺龍山寺) to pray to Yue Lao (月老), the Taoist deity associated with love, marriage, and matchmaking, hoping the god’s red thread of fate might connect them not with a romantic partner, but with a concert seat.
Fans placed purple-packaged snacks, BTS merchandise, seating charts, and wish lists on an altar table during the weekend. Purple is widely associated with BTS and its fans.
One fan told Reuters that BTS tickets are difficult to obtain, making Yue Lao a logical choice because securing a seat feels like another form of matchmaking.
The trend began on social media several years ago, with K-pop fans in Taiwan adapting traditional temple prayer practices to modern ticketing anxiety.
BTS last performed in Taiwan with all members in 2018. The group announced a new world tour earlier this year, with Kaohsiung selected for three Taiwan dates in November.
The shows are expected to bring major attention to Kaohsiung’s growing concert economy, following the city’s efforts in recent years to attract large-scale international music events and boost tourism through entertainment, transportation, and waterfront development.
