KAOHSIUNG — A narrow access road at HSR Zuoying Station has drawn complaints from drivers who say its width and tight turn make reaching the parking area unnecessarily difficult.

Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Mei-juan (陳玫娟) arranged an on-site inspection with representatives from Taiwan High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railways and the Railway Bureau after receiving complaints from residents.

The second-floor road runs from Gaotie Road through the station complex to Zhanqian North Road, near the rear of the Taiwan Railways station. It is about 2.4 meters wide, according to a Liberty Times report.

A sport utility vehicle measuring 1.85 meters across would have about 55 centimeters of clearance in total, or roughly 27.5 centimeters on each side if perfectly centered.

Drivers have also complained about the sharp angle of the turn. Scrape marks visible on the walls suggest that vehicles have repeatedly struck or rubbed against the structure.

One resident joked that people preparing for a driving test should first practice on the station road.

During the inspection, local representatives suggested moving part of the inside corner back to provide more turning space, provided the change would not affect the building’s structure.

Chen said specialists would need to determine whether that proposal was feasible.

Taiwan Railways said the road’s design complies with regulations. THSR agreed to repair damaged protective tubing around the corner, but no larger reconstruction has yet been announced.
