KAOHSIUNG — The first businesses in a restored section of Zuoying’s former Navy housing district are expected to open in October, bringing restaurants, accommodation and cultural operators into renovated homes once occupied by military families.
Kaohsiung Cultural Affairs Bureau (高雄市政府文化局) Director-General Wang Wen-tsui (王文翠) told the city council that renovation work along Wei 6th Road (緯六路) was nearing completion.
Around 60% of the operators included in the first phase have moved in or are preparing their premises, according to a Liberty Times report. The businesses include food and beverage outlets, guest accommodation and cultural or creative enterprises.
The bureau has said operations will begin in October. Project officials are reportedly working toward an Oct. 10 opening, although the date has not been formally confirmed.
The city has restored 36 former residences, while additional buildings remain in the design or renovation stages. Public facilities planned around the site include a shared neighborhood service office, four parking areas, three public restrooms and about 6,500 ping, or 21,500 square meters, of green space.
Wei 6th Road runs east to west through the former Navy dependents’ village. A 378-meter section was widened from 9 meters to 20 meters in 2025, with pedestrian areas and landscaping added alongside the roadway.
The project is intended to improve access for existing residents while allowing the historic housing to take on new commercial and community uses.
Zuoying contains Kaohsiung’s largest concentration of former military dependents’ housing. Such neighborhoods were built across Taiwan after World War II to accommodate military personnel and their families, but many have since been demolished or left vacant.
The October opening will cover only the first phase of the Wei 6th Road project. Further residences are expected to open gradually as design and restoration work continues.
