KAOHSIUNG — A woman surnamed Wang (王) has been sentenced to 17 years and eight months in prison after customs officers found 32 packets of heroin weighing more than 4 kilograms in her luggage at Kaohsiung International Airport (高雄國際機場), TVBS News reported Saturday.
The Kaohsiung District Court convicted Wang of jointly transporting a Category 1 narcotic. The ruling may be appealed.
According to the judgment cited by TVBS, Wang flew from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Thailand in January 2026.
Under arrangements made by a drug trafficking group, she received NT$27,000 for “expenses” and went to a designated location to collect a suitcase before flying back to Taiwan, the report said.
Customs officers noticed an irregularity while examining her checked luggage by X-ray after she arrived at Kaohsiung International Airport. An inspection found 32 packets of heroin concealed inside a tablet storage case in the suitcase.
The packets had a combined weight of more than 4 kilograms, according to the report.
The court found that the tablet case’s appearance and weight were plainly abnormal. Judges concluded that Wang, an adult in the prime of life, could not reasonably have failed to notice that something was wrong.
The court said the quantity of heroin could have seriously harmed public health and public safety if it had entered circulation.
Judges considered Wang’s admission of the offense and her subsequent attitude before imposing the prison term.
