KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung City will step up security measures for Christmas and New Year’s Eve events following a recent violent attack in Taipei, Mayor Chen Chi-mai said Monday.

The Liberty Times reports Mayor Chen said the city will conduct a tabletop security exercise on Dec. 23, followed by a full-scale field drill on Dec. 29, to ensure readiness for large public gatherings, including New Year’s Eve celebrations and holiday activities across the city.

In the immediate aftermath of the Taipei incident, the Kaohsiung City Government mobilized more than 200 police officers, working in coordination with the Railway Police, to strengthen patrols at major transportation hubs. Police visibility has also been increased at recent large-scale events, city officials said.

Chen emphasized that law enforcement has been instructed to maintain heightened security throughout the year-end period, particularly at mass transit facilities and crowded public venues. Authorities will also intensify crackdowns on illegal activity, he added.

“If there are any threats related to public safety — whether through social media intimidation or actions that could endanger the public — police will respond decisively with sufficient manpower to eliminate risks,” Chen said.

The city government said the stepped-up measures are intended to reassure the public and ensure that holiday events proceed safely and smoothly in southern Taiwan’s largest city.
