KAOHSIUNG — The City Transportation Bureau has officially rejected a call to open the Jhongjheng Underpass (中正地下道) to motorcycle traffic. The debate gained traction on the social media platform Threads, where commuters argued that allowing motorcycles through the underpass would bypass the complex intersections of Wufu and Kaisuan roads, potentially saving up to five minutes during off-peak hours and increasing overall safety.
In a response issued today, February 5, the Transportation Bureau turned down a public petition, explaining that the underpass remains a vital corridor for heavy vehicles and container trucks traveling between Fongshan, Lingya, and National Freeway One. Officials stated that the underpass’s original design, particularly its steep entry and exit gradients, did not account for motorcycle safety. Consequently, the ban will remain in place to prevent potential accidents.
