KAOHSIUNG — Kaohsiung (高雄) plans to add 1,200 bicycles to its YouBike fleet in November after average monthly use reached about 1.9 million trips in 2026, the Kaohsiung City Transportation Bureau said Monday, Aug. 31, 2026.
The new fleet will comprise 965 standard YouBike 2.0 bicycles and 235 YouBike 2.0E electric-assist bicycles, according to the China Times. The expansion would increase the number of bicycles by nearly 10%.
Once the additional bicycles enter service, Kaohsiung will have 14,306 YouBikes, including 2,141 electric-assist models, the bureau said.
As of the end of July, the city had established 1,500 rental stations and recorded more than 91 million cumulative trips since introducing YouBike 2.0 in July 2020. Ridership reached 2.19 million trips in May alone.
The bureau said satisfaction with the service had remained above 95% for five consecutive years.
An official bureau summary recorded 20.73 million YouBike trips in 2025, up 21.8% from 2024. At the end of 2025, the system had 1,473 stations and 13,106 bicycles, including 1,906 electric-assist models.
The city is also offering ride vouchers to encourage users to help balance bicycle availability. A rider who takes a bicycle from a station with no open docks can receive an NT$5 voucher, while returning a bicycle to a station with no available bikes can earn another NT$5. The maximum reward is NT$10 for one trip.
The bureau said public bicycles have become an important option for daily commuting, short trips and connections with the city’s wider public transportation network.
