KAOHSIUNG — A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug-impaired driving after crashing into 24 parked scooters in central Kaohsiung early on March 14, police said.

According to the Sinsing Precinct (新興分局), officers were called at about 2:30 a.m. to a crash outside a business on Jhongjheng 4th Road (中正四路) in Cianjin District (前金區). Police said the driver, surnamed Lai (賴), slammed his car into a long row of scooters parked along the roadside. No injuries were reported.

Officers at the scene said Lai appeared disoriented and lethargic. During their search, police said they found amphetamine inside a cigarette pack in the driver’s seat area. A saliva drug test later returned a positive result, according to police.

Lai was arrested on suspicion of violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act (毒品危害防制條例) and was transferred to prosecutors for further investigation. Police also cited him under Article 35 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act (道路交通管理處罰條例), impounded the vehicle, and confiscated its license plates.

Police said they maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward both illegal drugs and drug-impaired driving, warning that narcotics can severely distort perception and slow reaction times, posing a major threat to public safety and property.
