KAOHSIUNG — A retired former detective squad chief in Kaohsiung has been indicted for allegedly using his police authority to obtain surveillance footage of a romantic rival and later filing false accusations against him, prosecutors said.
The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office said the former officer, surnamed Hu (胡), was a detective squad chief from September 2024 to March 2025.
Prosecutors said Hu was unhappy that another detective squad chief, surnamed Chang (張), was seeing a woman surnamed Sun (孫).
According to the indictment, in December 2024, Hu went to a hotel on Jianguo 3rd Road (建國三路) in Sanmin District (三民區), showed his police ID, and told hotel staff he needed to review surveillance footage for a fraud investigation.
Prosecutors said Hu saw footage showing Chang and Sun passing in front of the hotel, but not entering it. He allegedly asked hotel staff to take screenshots, which he photographed and copied, unlawfully collecting their personal information.
Hu was also accused of photographing Sun arriving at Chang’s residence on Jan. 4, 2025, then making or arranging three 110 calls under false names to report that Chang was meeting a woman at home during working hours.
Prosecutors said Hu later sent a complaint to the police department’s disciplinary and commissioner’s offices, attaching the photos and falsely accusing Chang of visiting a hotel during work hours.
Chang was later investigated by the department’s disciplinary office, reports said.
Hu denied wrongdoing, saying he had accessed the footage to assist with a fraud case and filed the complaint to determine whether Chang had skipped work.
Prosecutors rejected his explanation and indicted him on charges including unlawful use of personal information by a public servant and false accusation.
