PINGTUNG — The central government has approved NT$476 million for the Pingtung County Government (屏東縣政府) to execute the second phase of its historic preservation project, according to a county announcement.

The funding will finance the restoration and repurposing of three primary sites: Xianguang 10th Village (憲光十村) in Pingtung City, the Chaozhou Japanese Historical Architecture Cultural Park (潮州日式歷史建築文化園區), and the Donggang Republic Village (東港共和新村).
Donggang Republic Village was constructed in 1940 to house Japanese Navy aviation officers stationed at the Dapeng Bay seaplane base. The Republic of China Air Force later received the properties to house military personnel and their dependents. The site was registered as a historic building cluster in 2023.
The Chaozhou park was originally built in 1938 as official residences for Linbian River flood control units and was later repurposed as Highway Bureau dormitories. The site features 15 wooden, reinforced concrete, and brick structures registered as historic buildings in 2019.
In Pingtung City, Xianguang 10th Village was built in 1927 to house military police when the Pingtung airfield transitioned to military use. The county’s Cultural Affairs Department (文化處) stated the restoration of these structures, four of which were registered as historic in 2018, constitutes the final phase of the nearby Shengli Star Village (勝利星村) cultural area.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) stated the county aims to replicate the Shengli Star Village model to create cultural and tourism hubs in the Chaozhou and Donggang areas. Cultural Affairs Department officials noted that initial planning for the Donggang and Chaozhou restorations began last year.
