KAOHSIUNG — A 57-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after driving under the influence of drugs and crashing into multiple vehicles in Lingya District (苓雅區), narrowly missing a woman and two children who were walking nearby.

A silver SUV-style car driven by a man surnamed Tseng (曾), veered into oncoming traffic on Fuan Road (福安路) at around 8 p.m. Tuesday, colliding first with a parked delivery truck before plowing into four motorcycles and overturning, according to police.

Surveillance footage shows a woman walking with two young children passing the crash site moments before impact. The children ran to safety after hearing the collision, avoiding injury.

Tseng sustained minor injuries and was trapped inside the overturned vehicle until emergency responders arrived. Officers later discovered three packets of heroin and an e-cigarette containing etomidate inside the car.

A roadside saliva test returned positive results for multiple substances, including opioids, amphetamines, etomidate, and cathinones, police said.

Tseng was arrested on suspicion of drug offenses and transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office for investigation.

Police also cited him under the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act for driving under the influence. Authorities said the vehicle’s registration had been canceled due to an overdue inspection, prompting additional penalties and vehicle seizure.
