KAOHSIUNG / TAINAN — Taxi fares in Tainan City will include a Lunar New Year surcharge during the upcoming holiday period, following the city’s standard seasonal pricing rules. The surcharge period and amount are aligned with neighboring Kaohsiung City. Officials said matching the rules helps reduce confusion for passengers traveling between the two areas.
According to the Tainan City Government, the surcharge period will run from 12:00 a.m. on Feb. 13 through midnight on Feb. 22, covering 10 days from three days before Lunar New Year’s Eve through the sixth day of the holiday. During this period, taxis will continue to charge regular daytime and nighttime rates, with an additional NT$50 added to the base fare.
The city’s Transportation Bureau said all licensed taxis are equipped with meters that include a built-in Lunar New Year surcharge function. Drivers are required to activate the setting during the holiday period.
If the surcharge function is not selected, drivers must still charge only the amount shown on the meter and may not add fees manually. Passengers are advised to pay the fare displayed on the meter.
Officials said the standardized surcharge is intended to prevent price gouging during the holiday and protect consumers while maintaining consistent market conditions.
The city urged passengers to request a receipt after each trip and to report any violations, including unauthorized surcharges, intentional detours, or refusal of short-distance fares.
