The move follows repeated complaints about congestion at the airport during what officials have described as “extreme peak” hours. Passenger flow is especially heavy between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., when more than 2,000 travelers can enter the departure area within a two-hour window.
According to the airport, AirAsia (亞洲航空) is scheduled to launch a Kuala Lumpur-Kaohsiung-Osaka route on June 15, with seven flights per week. T’way Air (德威航空) began operating a Kaohsiung-Busan route on March 29, also with seven weekly flights. Spring Airlines (春秋航空) is scheduled to open a Kaohsiung-Ningbo route on July 4, with two flights per week.
While Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport remained the primary entry point, handling over 75% of all passenger traffic, Kaohsiung International Airport recorded the strongest growth among Taiwan’s major airports. Passenger volume at Kaohsiung reached 5.727 million in 2025, up 23.3% from the previous year.
