Kaohsiung has introduced scooter parking areas without individual spaces, saying the design can accommodate different vehicle sizes. Some riders fear the result will be scooters packed too tightly to remove safely.

A new lakeside sidewalk on Wenqian Road (文前路) in Niaosong District (鳥松) has opened, adding another piece to Kaohsiung’s walking network around Chengcing Lake (澄清湖). The Kaohsiung Public Works Bureau said the new section gives pedestrians a safer route along the lake, where residents previously had to walk beside traffic.

Kaohsiung traffic police say deaths of older adults at intersections fell about 40% from January to May after officers began assisting seniors at risky crossings.

Lai Media reported that at least two cars and two scooters had been left in marked parking spaces that were later canceled as part of traffic preparations for the opening. After the spaces were repainted as red lines, the vehicles were classified as illegally parked and towed.

During the trial, the court commissioned Feng Chia University’s Vehicle Accident Investigation Center to review the crash. The center analyzed 186 seconds of dashcam footage, breaking the video into 5,426 frames for comparison. The analysis found that the bus maintained a straight path and did not veer, while Chuang moved into the bus’s right-side blind spot from behind.

Chen compared the bridge to a successful operation finished with bad stitches. The main engineering work may be good, he said, but people will still notice a poorly finished result. The new bridge is shorter because the railway beneath it has been moved underground. Officials say it will improve traffic and reconnect areas that were previously separated by rail infrastructure

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said Thursday the original railings were “ugly” and embarrassing, but said the bridge’s construction quality and safety met standards. Chen said the city would continue making adjustments and should accept public criticism of public works projects.

Eleven bus routes serving Fongshan Transfer Station (鳳山轉運站) will change stops or routes from Aug. 1 because of construction linked to the MRT O13 Dadong Station (大東站) joint development project, the Kaohsiung Transportation Bureau said.

The bridge drew criticism in recent days after residents said the red railings along the bridge deck resembled Japanese torii gates. Others raised safety concerns, saying the gaps between the railings appeared too wide. The city’s New Construction Office said the open railing design was chosen to preserve views of the Love River, but contractors have since repainted the railings white and started installing protective netting.
